Through photography and video collage, I examine memory as a shared, fluid entity—one that shifts across time, events, and geography. As a Japanese immigrant living in America for over 25 years, I inhabit a dual perspective that continually questions the notion of “home” and its evolving meaning. This duality informs my practice, allowing me to investigate identity, cultural belonging, and the ephemeral nature of recollection. Following the loss of my parents, I returned to Izumo province, Japan—the resting place of my ancestors and a region steeped in mythology and ancient customs—to reconnect with the traditions that shaped my lineage. My journey led me to Mihonoseki, a sacred port town where I witnessed a community devoted to rituals symbolizing the death and rebirth of a god. Experiencing these ceremonies in the wake of personal grief deepened my understanding of impermanence and reincarnation, offering a profound acceptance of life’s transience. This series considers how cultural identity is preserved, fractured, and reshaped across time and distance. Through photographic and moving-image works, I seek to capture these fleeting moments of remembrance—bridging the personal and collective, the past and the present. <img width="600" height="720" work of photographic images and chemigrams documenting my exploration of memory, identity, and the concept of "home." This series represents my personal journey of reconciling life between two homes, Japan and America, while reflecting on the ways memory can shape and redefine our sense of belonging. Developed over several years, the series emerged during a period of separation from Japan. I sought out subjects in America that resonated with memories of my homeland, using light and shadow to capture fragments of recollection. These fragments are woven into a visual pathway toward understanding the essence of "home." In creating KAIKOU, I blend film photography with historical photographic processes, such as the chemigram, to illuminate the transient and elusive qualities of memory. By integrating the analog sensibility of film with the experimental nature of chemigrams, I carefully shape light, chemicals, and photographic paper to create organic, textured visuals that reflect my encounters with fragmented and shifting recollections. Each image emerges through an intuitive process of experimentation, embracing the unpredictable interactions between materials to capture ephemeral moments that resonate with nostalgia and impermanence. While KAIKOU reflects a deep sense of nostalgia and longing for my birthplace, it transcends personal memory. It is a spiritual journey through a shifting landscape of recollection, where reality and illusion intertwine. Following a route through small towns, from the West Coast to mid-America, the close-knit troupe continues the tradition of the traveling circus. Unlike today’s overproduced theatrical mega-circuses, Culpepper &amp; Merriweather brings together small-town communities in village-style events that many families visit year after year. These photographs explore the lives of the performers and the circus community at large, “under the tent” and on the road. As a Japanese photographer living in America, I am interested in interrogating the cores of both of my cultures – cores that are permanent, unchanging, nostalgic, and in a mysterious way, true. Her work explores the shared memories between people and places, reflecting on how they evolve through time, events, and cultural shifts. Drawing on her dual perspective as a Japanese immigrant living in America, she brings a distinct depth to her art. While studying Graphic Design at Pratt Institute, Lieh discovered a profound connection to photography, which soon became her primary means of navigating and conveying diverse cultural landscapes, seamlessly blending conceptual and documentary practices. She is the recipient of the 2025 NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship in Photography and the 2024 En Foco Photography Fellowship. Her artist book KAIKOU was shortlisted for The Dummy Award 2026. Additionally, she was named a winner of the 2025 Premi Fotografia Femenina at InCadaqués Photo Festival and a finalist in the Penumbra Foundation 2024 Workspace Program.
